How Many Followers Do You Really Need on Twitter?

Anyone out there with an online business has probably discovered by now that Twitter is the place to be. If you are just getting started, it may seem confusing about following and getting followed, especially in how many followers you may need overall.

Of course, it is important to increase your followers on Twitter, but it’s not always necessary to get carried away!

How many Twitter followers do you really need?

In all honesty, there are some very popular Twitter users out there that have 50,000 or even 500,000 followers. As an individual potentially marketing your brand or company, it is reasonable to guesstimate that you could reach 5000 followers within one year at a normal pace. The important thing to keep in mind is that you should be reaching out to people and making genuine connections. There is absolutely no reason to have thousands and thousands of followers if they aren’t paying attention to you or don’t care what you have to say.

The best method to use is to start to follow people first, join in on conversations, and reach out to them. If people feel that you have something to offer, like relevant information, they will start retweeting your tweets, and you can gain even more followers as a result. From there, you can start to sandwich in links to your blog, website, or information about your products. The important thing is to be cautious in your use of self-promotion because it needs to be balanced with legitimately talking to other people!

Last of all, if you are purely using Twitter for recreation and not promoting your business, do whatever you want to! It is truly not a popularity contest, unless it comes to marketing. With Twitter, you can stay in touch with coworkers and friends, read their updates in real-time, and tell them what’s going on with you. It’s that simple…

  1. Once in a while I “clean out” my followers. two things I do, try to find those who have 50K followers and 10 tweets, and people who have no interest in following me back.
I do follow quite a few people knowing they will not follow me back, such as those with a lot to offer in their tweets.
The ROI from Twitter is not all that good for blogs, in my opinion. I get better results from Stumble or DIGG.
On the other hand, I have made some invaluable connections on Twitter.

  2. Great post….its absolutely right that we need to make our followers engage with our tweets and also we need to engage with their tweet. I have not many followers in my list, among them i know around 60-70% of my list.

  4. Couldn’t agree more. I follow some who have 50K+ followers just because they do have good information in their tweets, but I much prefer to follower folks with lower follower number so the interaction can be more personal.I’m thinking 200 to 250 might be the right number, if they are the right 250.
