Tiger Woods and Personal Privacy

For the past week you’ve been hearing about Tiger Woods and his little accident at his South Florida home. Unfortunately for many who are concerned with more important news, this has led to the eclipse of more expedient stories and to be truthful, all the major networks are responsible including the online tabloids, TMZ.

But the debate goes a little deeper as the incident has led to the speculation by many that the golfer was having an affair or under the influence of prescription drugs. Of course we’ll never know the reasons for the crash and there is a great possibility that there could be other reasons as to why the pro golfer crashed his SUV, but that is besides the point.

For one, FHP (Florida Highway Patrol) has taken too much interest in this case, after all it was a freaking accident with no other vehicles involved. When do we require an investigation for a person crashing into a hydrant and tree? I’m sure there are many who would want to have search warrants for the Wood’s home but is that their business?

While Tiger Woods has made the following statement: Although I am a well-known person and have made my career as a professional athlete, I have been dismayed to realize the full extent of what tabloid scrutiny really means,” he does go on to say the following:

“But no matter how intense curiosity about public figures can be, there is an important and deep principle at stake which is the right to some simple, human measure of privacy. I realize there are some who don’t share my view on that. But for me, the virtue of privacy is one that must be protected in matters that are intimate and within one’s own family. Personal sins should not require press releases and problems within a family shouldn’t have to mean public confessions.”

Everyone deserves their privacy, and Tiger Woods is one who likes to stay out of the media spotlight. Shouldn’t everyone have that right?
