Rapid Growth at RunKeeper Community

Available for both Android and the iPhone, the RunKeeper fitness app employs your smartphone’s GPS radio to track the distance, time, pace, route, and elevation of your jogs. If you haven’t heard from them, then it’s about time because PCWorld selected RunKeeper as the ‘Run Smarter’ app among best apps available for multiple phone platforms.

There has been explosive growth in the number of unique monthly visitors that visit Runkeeper’s website, according to Compete.

One plausible explanation for the explosive growth of visits to RunKeeper’s website is the fact that users can sync their data to the website and later view a history of their activity for free.

Not only does this online community allow you to track your activities, miles and calories but also allows you to keep an interactive record of your path to fitness. The site has implemented the Facebook Connect API, which allows you to bring your Facebook friends to RunKeeper. Also, this social network is inherently competitive as you can look for both friends (through Google Contacts or Facebook) and runners in your area and keep track of who has the most activities per month.

Last but not least, there’s a search feature to find races anywhere in the country and you can see what other RunKeeper users are participating in this event.

The Pro version (for iPhone only) includes timing for interval training and audio cues, and it integrates with your music playlists. Free basic version, $10 premium version; get RunKeeper for Android or iPhone.
