According to InsideFacebook.com , a popular Facebook blog, the favored social media platform is in the black to the tune of $700 million and on track toward a whopping $1.1 billion revenue for 2010.

Facebook is reluctant to divulge such privileged information which is typical of a private venture. But the growing trends from a mere $150 million seen in revenues for 2007 have almost doubled every year. The rising graph is expected to continue, making Facebook in the multi-billion dollar range over the next few years.

With the bulk of its income from advertising, it hopes to tip the scale once again with these successful trends. Landing advertising from big brands like Microsoft and virtual goods and social games, such as Farmville, Facebook continues to bring in the revenue and draws in people successfully.

There has been some speculation that Facebook will be getting a ‘face’lift and dipping its toes into a new income stream, the payment service business. Rather than siding with a payment service such as PayPal, credit purchases may be able to be made through a new Facebook payment option. With its over 400 million users, Facebook reaches many eyeballs and their associated pocket books. It will be interesting to see the evolution of this social media revolution.

Today we will look at two small topics concerning YouTube. If you’re interested in being the next major sensation, here are two tips that can help you. First of all, YouTube, unlike TV is not monitored by the FCC. Yes you can’t post nudity, terrorist stuff or other crap but basically that is the all the rules there are.

In terms of racy content, it pays to be out there. No I’m not saying if you are attractive you have to strip or come close to that in order to gain views. But be suggestive. Two classic examples are the CommunityChannel and Spricket24.

Both channels feature two beautiful ladies who talk about every day topics, some of them being taboo, and even though they do not dress in provocative clothing like HotForWords, they carry the charm and suggestive content for people to watch them. Natalie (from the CommunityChanel) chooses to use “your mom” phrases as well as the occasional f bomb and not to mention quite a few double intenders. However, what makes her videos appealing is the fact that you would not expect it from her. And while she is not way out there in terms of content, she does bring enough controversy to the table to keep her viewers.

Peter Chow: This guy is the epitome of controversy. If you have never watched one of Peter Chow’s vlogs, I suggest you do so. Not only is the guy downright lewd when it comes to discussing sexual subjects, but he styles women as mothabitches not to mention getting in trouble with some rcist comments (or at least they were taken that way). Yet he is the number 4 subscribed channel in Canada and the average views of his videos exceed half a million per video. And even with this he has been able to score a commercial advertising Doritos chips.

So I’m not saying you must use these examples to be successful, but if you think you have the talent and are interested in raking up a little controversy on the net try it.

Same thing applies to online search and with the recent troubles Google has been having with the UE, Microsoft is ceasing the opportunity to launch a full scale ad campaign against the goliath of search engines.

According to Ashley Highfield who is the Vice President of Consumer and Online and Microsoft UK, Redmond plans to use this to their advantage. “This is a big moment – we are taking out our slingshots and taking on Goliath,” she said.

The world’s number one software provider plans to spend millions of pounds promoting its search engine over Google on TV ads next week and a hope to garner some attention. We’ll have to wait and see if they prove to be successful.

If you haven’t already seen it, your Facebook posts might be showing up in Google search results around the web. The search engine honcho has indeed begun to index Facebook content and has already been indexing information from MySpace and Twitter.

One bigger difference now is that the Facebook information is more limited than the rest of the social sites. Access on Facebook is pretty much limited to updates from the Facebook Pages section where information about companies and celebrities mainly lie. Results on Google vary from competitor Bing’s search engine results which are backed by Microsoft, a Facebook investor.

Google’s other foray into social searching was done through the beta release of Google Social Search. The point of this experiment was to make search results more personal since web content would contain information specific to your online contacts and social circles.

Should we worry about this? It depends. Different people will have different feelings about the availability of information they can find on themselves. Facebook users do have control over what access outsiders have to their information but social searching is still a concept that may take getting used to, even to the most seasoned online social climber.

Social media isn’t just for us humans anymore. Pet lovers around the world are using social networking sites to connect their pets, as well as each other. Sites and apps like Dogbook, Catbook, Petizens, and AnimalAttraction.com are just a few of the pet-themed social media sites popping up on the Internet recently.

Most of these sites are via Facebook or similar to the networking site in that users are able to post photos and create a profile that includes their pet’s sex, pedigree if they know it, favorite toys, and other info. Their owners are then able to post messages and share information as with other social networking sites.

Many of these sites are general networking pages for animal lovers, while others have a specific focus. AllAboutPets.com is a forum for pet lovers to share ideas on pet care, and PetPassions.com is basically an online dating site for pet lovers. These sites aren’t exactly new—just as there are plenty of niche online dating sites on the web, there seem to be just as many animal-focused and other specialized sites—but with the growing popularity of sites like Facebook and Twitter, the idea of “niche” social networking is receiving more buzz than ever before.

There’s not much of a buzz for Buzz, Google’s latest foray into social networking. Some technology experts are calling it “social networking for the anti-social”, others are calling it a “social networking aggregator” that does little more than funnel information from similar sites through it, and yet others say that it’s not quite different enough from its competitors Twitter and Facebook to be all that ground-breaking.

At first glance Buzz looks like a straightforward blend of the two sites. Users add friends, create profiles, and post status updates, to name just a few of the similar features. No doubt Google picked up a few things from Twitter, which they failed to buy last year, and are using them to their advantage.

Buzz is built into Gmail, so users do not need to pick and choose a separate list of “friends” to invite, as with most of the other sites. This easily-accessed information is proving to be both a blessing and a curse for Google, who has been heavily criticized for Buzz’s privacy options. To their credit, Google is working on installing more secure privacy features that allow users to opt-out more than in the earlier version, but the negative press has already turned off many users.

Today I came across this article on tracking social media marketing and was quite impressed. Some points are just awesome and definitely deserve more attention.

Here are some of my favorite take-aways:

Quality is what matters. When you focus on quantity, you are getting it wrong. You will see some results but you are definitely missing the overall point of social media networking.

Hearing does not mean listening. How many people do you ACTUALLY reach when you post a tweet, make a status update or blog post?

To be a success, you must participate . If a marketer joins a social network and focuses on promoting themselves, product or company, they’ll get an entirely different set of outcomes than those they have goals for.

An objective is really important. To achieve something, you need to know what exactly you are seeking: this way your activity will be guided. This is why tracking your social media marketing results (like any Internet marketing results) is so essential: you need to know where you are now to know where to move further to achieve results.

Social media is an investment. You can’t expect fast results because this way you sacrifice on the quality of the connections. It depends on the Roadmap that guides your: Audience > Objectives > Strategy > Tactics > Tools > Measurement. Effective social media marketing is about building trust and relationships which can only be achieved if you invest time.

It may seem crazy, but in all honesty, many blogs are taking a different approach to the whole commenting system. We’ve always come to view comments as a major part of a blog, and in truth it is, but what happens when things get out of hand?

If you’re a regular at Engadget, you are aware that commenting is turned off temporarily. Stemming from the media frenzy concerning the iTampon iPad, many of the commenter’s became fed up with the excessive coverage of the device. That led to quite a few heated debates, and according to Engadget “threatening in some situations…” While I have not seen read anywhere in the comments where threats were carried out, I can personally say that the comments were beginning to look like Bagdad.

According to Engadget, turning off comments is not hurting the majority of their readers because the majority of their million plus readers never comment. This is true as statistics have proven that less than 5% of readers actually comment on the article they are reader (which is why 90% of comments are spam). However, that doesn’t mean that comments do not matter to most readers. It is true that many readers will not comment, however they will read comments and if the option is available, rank up or down comments they dislike.

Personally I know that after reading any article on any major website, I generally read a couple of the comments. Why? It gives an idea of what the audience’s reaction is to the post. More importantly if rating is available, you can have a better idea of what visitors consider useful comments and how they affect the article.

Except for controversial topics, comments are a vital part of any blog and while the majority of viewers will not comment, they will read what other readers have to say. That’s just my opinion however, what are your thoughts?
