Facebook Adds Equality in User Profiles

More changes at Facebook have hit and users now have more options for sharing their relationship status with their friends. New categories to choose from have been added to the marital/relationship status.

Users can now select from the following choices:

  • In a Domestic Partnership
  • In a Civil Union
  • Single
  • In a Relationship
  • Engaged
  • Married
  • It’s Complicated
  • In an Open Relationship
  • Widowed
  • Separated
  • Divorced

Countries outside the US can expect to see the same changes coming to users soon. In the countries around the world where same-sex marriage is legal, users will not be able to see or use these new category options. Facebook representatives say the change was often requested by Facebook users who wanted to portray their genuine relationship status.

Facebook has been involved with promoting the causes of the LGBT community, especially with their high profile involvement in the gay teen suicide crisis in the past year. They teamed up with GLAAD, the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation to help promote an anti-bullying campaign through the largest social network.

While not all people see the move as a positive one, many who are able to update their profiles appropriately are at least happy with the recognition. Some partnerships who have been ongoing for some time are just as happy to continue listing themselves as ‘married’, even if their relationship is not legally recognized.
