Be Careful Who Your ‘Friends’ Are

One of the first rules we teach our children is never to talk with strangers. This is just as important making on line friends while on social networking sites. These days you never know who is lurking or viewing your profile.

Take the latest news that Al Qaeda may want to ‘friend’ you on Facebook. Terrorist organizations are using social media to stretch their reach. In addition to sharing their information they are promoting themselves on line and have realized the value of social networking.

Steve Graham, senior director for EC Council, a certification membership council for online security, cautions all users of the web and highlights the fact that everyone needs to take their personal security seriously and comments that

“reports like this show that we are figuratively sitting next to terrorists”.

Terrorist organizations have been using social networking sites like Facebook to share their operational strategies that can include information on bomb making, and weapon use. The Department of Homeland Security cautions users and was astounded to find detailed information regarding specifics of AK-47 use and maintenance.

In addition to ‘how to’ videos Facebook has been used by extremists to promote user groups and these groups can use Facebook and other social media streams to promote extremist propaganda.
