Amazon Ventures Back Into Social Networking

According to the United States Patent and Trademark Office, Amazon has been awarded a patent for a ‘social networking system’. Based on the description of the patent, Amazon is developing a network that is similar to the other systems popular today including the popular Facebook.

Amazon has previously owned a social networking site called PlanetAll which they bought in 1998. The site was shut down in 2000 when the company was not seeing much potential in the venture. Interestingly, other individuals have been through the Patent Office to file social networking site systems that basically all had the same description. The patent applications describe ‘systems’ or ‘methods’ for connecting people online. In 2006, the site Friendster filed a patent that resembled the other sites before it. They were also give several other patents for specific aspects of the social networking technology. Just a few months ago, Facebook was awarded the patent for the Newsfeed idea.

When it comes to who actually owns the patent for social networking, it is anybody’s guess but it doesn’t seem as though social networking inventions will be stopping any time soon. Amazon will likely be next to launch a competing social networking site but certainly won’t be the last.
